So here in London for about a week now and this is my first post, hope you enjoy it!
Last week on Wednesday, low and behold, it was my birthday and my friend had asked me what I felt like. Straight away I piped up “Steak”.
She’s a local so she knew right away and suggested we go to Flat Iron Steak. It’s located in trendy SOHO, West End.
Now this restaurant can be easily missed as the signage is obscure unless you are face on to their front. I actually missed it a couple times and wanted to strangle Google Maps for lying to me.
Ok, so enough with the jibber, let’s move onto the STEAK! mm Steak 🙂
Before I do move onto the main course, its best to describe the whole experience once walking into the restaurant.
I was promptly greeted by a waiter, who needed my friend to be there before she could seat me, fair enough, as I could see that the place wasn’t very big, quite cosy in fact but didn’t realise how cosy until we were seated. I wandered down to the bar and the very friendly bar tender made a devine cocktail, can’t quite remember the name. Doesn’t matter. What made this bar unique was the donuts which were baking in their little oven..what?? Donuts in a bar? Yes! I didn’t get a chance to try them this time as I didn’t want to ruin my appetite, but as Arnie famously said in Terminator “I’ll be back”.
Once my friend arrived we were lead upstairs and into the main dining area. Yes very cosy, because there was only the two of us with possibly an etxra person who was late, we had to share a table with three other people. This was fine, the part where I felt uncomfortable, was when I was seated. The seats aren’t made for long stays and it was so unbearably hot! Something I need to get used to here I think, thought I was already hot in Sydney 😉 There is also community popcorn on the table which we munched on while we waited.
We ordered their signature steak which is the Flat Iron Steak. I don’t remember them specifying exactly what cut the steak is, I suspect its blade steak. But it was only 10 pounds and worth a try. We also ordered some sides, cheesy aubergine and fries and accompanying sauces.
What is special about this piece of meat is that it is already sliced for you and is presented on a wooden chopping board. Very rustic and really suited the whole ambiance of the place. I had ordered medium rare and my steak was cooked perfectly and was tender for blade. It was actually bigger than it looked, men might disagree with me though. I like my steak well seasoned so the visible flakes of salt suited me but I can understand how it could potentially ruin it for someone who didn’t like salt as much. It arrived with a side of spinach in a cup. The Bearnaise sauce I ordered tasted homemade and complimented the steak well. I probably didn’t even need the sauce but I love sauce and can never help myself!
All in all, a good feed for 10 pounds, sides range from 3-5 pounds, great service and a nice little place. If you’re in a large group or even a normal sized group, more than 2, be prepared to wait for a table as they take no reservations. If you haven’t been here before and not in a rush, give it a go!
